Paul Rowley rues missed opportunities as Red Devils lose brutal elimination playoff - via Youtube

Head coach Paul Rowley believed there was “some light at the end of the tunnel” for Salford Red Devils, although remained tight-lipped about whether he and his staff had been paid.

Salford had a £1.2 million salary cap reimposed after failing to meet their February payroll and while the players received their wages last week, averting a threatened strike, the backroom staff did not.

The issue had been reported had now been resolved.

However, Rowley neither confirmed nor denied whether that was the case as he previewed the Red Devils’ Challenge Cup clash against Bradford on Friday night.

He said: “Just stay on the rugby, I’m not into all that.

“If I do that then I’ll end up rolling along with it. If I keep it black and white, it’s the best way.”

The Red Devils were sanctioned at the start of the season due to a protracted takeover saga and fielded a youth team in their Super League opener, losing to St Helens 82-0 – a competition record.

The Red Devils had been unable to recruit more players who did not feature in the Challenge Cup game against Midlands Hurricanes last month.

However, they were granted dispensation to name three new players – including captain Kallum Watkins and star half-back Marc Sneyd – in their 17-man squad for Friday’s defeat at Castleford.

The Salford Head Coach confirmed restrictions were still in place ahead of the visit of the Bulls, with the Red Devils looking to put their league woes to one side.

Paul Rowley admitted trying to discern improvements week-on-week proved unfeasible after starting the season with four-straight league defeats, but he was hopeful of the situation improving.

He added: “It is impossible. We’ve not got going and if anything.

“We’ve regressed in a lot of respects with our continuity, on-field practice, all that sort of stuff.

“We just need to plough our way through this difficult period. But I think there’s some light at the end of the tunnel now and hopefully this week will present us with an opportunity to kick-start it.

“It’s usually a performance or a win that kicks you on to bigger and better things.”

The Red Devils will now have to their attention to Bradford Bulls in the Challenge Cup and will be hoping to advance in the competition despite the off-field situation.

The game will kick off on 8pm on Friday, at the Salford Community Stadium, with a victory being needed to relight the team’s season.
