Salford women being celebrated through art

Local women are being celebrated through an exciting exhibition celebrating the creativity, perseverance, and entrepreneurial spirit.

The exhibition, HER STORY, will be celebrating local female artists following Women into Visual Art (WIVA) and Enterprise Workshops, which were part of the Whose Art, Whose Culture initiative supported by Salford CVS.

The exhibition opened to the public on March 10, and will be free to attend at the New Adelphi Building until Wednesday 26 March.

The event, HER STORY, will be a celebration of women across Salford who have participated in the workshops, who have developed their creative abilities and business aspirations.

The project that has its origins in Nigeria has been effectively incorporated into Langworthy Cornerstone’s art and women’s empowerment projects – which has offered an opportunity for creative development and local economic prospects.

One participant in the exhibition, Lorna Johnson shared her journey in the visual arts, as she said: “I am in my 60s, pursuing a visual arts course was a decision deeply rooted in my lifelong passion for creativity and expression.

“I was captivated by the power of visual mediums to convey emotions, stories, and ideas beyond the capabilities of words.”

For younger artists like Adrienne Easey, HER STORY, and the Women in Visual Arts (WIVA) initiative have provided a space for artistic and personal growth:

Adrienne said: “I am a 20-year-old Manchester-based artist currently attending the University of Salford work primarily focuses on personal experiences or close family friend relationships.

“Being an artist has given me a creative freedom to explore my thoughts and feelings in a way that is not restricted, and my artwork is a self-expression of how women in today’s day and age can feel ignored and misunderstood.”

Adrienne shared the impact of WIVA, she said: “Attending Women in Visual Arts (WIVA) has been an amazing experience, it has allowed me to learn different perspectives from women who have different backgrounds.

“The opportunity built my skills to be more confident in my personal practice and to be able to make mistakes without putting myself down.”

HER STORY is more than just an art show; it is a visual narrative that celebrates individual and group experiences.

Those who attend can expect a wide variety of artistic creations that address themes of identity, resiliency, and cultural expression, such as paintings, sculptures, mixed media, and digital art.

And the show is a significant turning point for many of the participating artists, who have progressed from beginners to self-assured artists.

HER STORY is sure to be a positive experience, regardless matter whether you are an enthusiastic art lover, a supporter of women in business, or just interested in the relationship between creativity and commerce.

In addition to celebrating the strength of women’s voices in Salford’s flourishing arts industry, attendees will get the chance to interact with up-and-coming artists and uncover amazing local talent.

The exhibition will be open from 11am until 3pm between March 10 and March 26 – with more information found here.
