Post Office branches based on Rossall Way - Google Map

Salford MP Rebecca Long Bailey has shared an update with residents regarding the proposed closure of the local Post Office branch.

The update follows the decision made on Tuesday 12 November, proposing that the postal service would look to offload 115 directly owned Crown Post Offices, which employ approximately 1,000 people.

The move could see the branches transferred to retail partners or postmasters, or potentially closed, with both the Eccles and Salford Precinct branches included.

Following the decision by the Post Office, Rebecca Long Bailey MP and a group of over 20 cross-party MPs wrote to the Chair and CEO.

The group of 21 MP that range from Salford, Fylde, St Albans, and Portsmouth North asked for answers to a number of fundamental questions.

The letter was also signed by Worsley and Eccles MP Michael Wheeler, requesting a full written response that will be able to provide full transparency to everyone involved.

Months after the letter was sent to Government Ministers the Salford MP has shared an update on the future of the Salford Post Office branch.

Rebecca Long Bailey MP said: “Following on from my letter to Government Ministers raising concerns about proposal to close Salford City’s Post Office.

“I have received a response which has confirmed no decision has yet been made about the future of Directly Managed Branches, including Salford City’s Post Office.”

The Salford MP continued: “I will continue to call for our Post Office to remain open and I will be monitoring this very closely.

“Our Post Office is an essential part of our local economy; with well-trained staff who have a wealth of experience between them.

“Our Post Office is relied upon by local residents and businesses, and those who collect their pensions and benefits.”

Following on from my letter to Government Ministers raising concerns about proposals to close Salford City’s Post Office, I have now received a response from Ministers.

The challenge from the Salford MP will be important, as the 115 branches are the only remaining branches directly owned by the Post Office, which has seen the numbers fall from nearly 400 in 2010.

In the future all post offices will be franchises – currently retailers such like WH Smith, Tesco, Morrisons and the Co-Op operate around 2,000 Post Offices across the country.

Other branches are part of a network of independent postmasters that currently operate around 9,000 in England.
