violent crimes against the elderly - GMP

A man has been jailed for eight years for violent robberies of elderly victims, after following them home.

Kiril Mihaylov, 31, of Hamilton Road, was sentenced on Monday 3 March 2025 at Manchester Crown Court for two robberies and a residential burglary.

One of his victims was a 96-year-old Little Hulton woman, who was violently robbed and her jewellery stolen from her.

The victim, who has since died, was meeting  family members in Manchester city centre for a coffee and at around 6pm on 1 August 2024.

When she caught the bus home, Mihaylov followed her from Piccadilly Gardens back to her home in Little Hulton.

When the victim entered her home, Mihaylov forcibly grabbed her necklace before ripping it from her neck. The victim quickly went to one of her neighbours to seek refuge and call the police.

A few weeks later Mihaylov followed a 82-year-old victim home from Manchester city centre.

She was walking down Trinity Way when she was punched in her stomach and pushed to the ground.

The 82-year-old victim had her jewellery grabbed from her neck and her earring taken by Mihaylov.

The following day an 80-year-old Salford man, who had been out shopping in the city centre, was burgled.

His patio doors had been smashed, and he found Mihaylov standing in his house with a large knife in his hand.

When DNA and CCTV evidence led police to Mihaylov, they found pictures of stolen items on his phone and were able to recover one of the watches stolen.

Following the sentencing on Monday 3 March, Detective Inspector Michael Sharples, of Salford’s Neighbourhood Crime Team, said: “Mihaylov’s actions were cowardly. He would systematically prey on elderly people who he saw going about their daily lives in the city centre and would follow them home thinking they would be an easy target.

“As a team, we cannot thank the victims enough, for coming forward and supporting our investigation. Their involvement has helped us secure enough evidence to convict Mihaylov and ensure he cannot harm anyone else.”

DI Sharples continued: “These incidents were particularly shocking as he targeted elderly people.

“When speaking with the victims, we could sense just how much they valued their independence, and their days out to the city centre. Mihaylov’s actions have left them shaken and questioning their safety.

“I hope that by knowing he is now behind bars, this will provide them with a small measure of comfort, and that they will continue to confidently go about their daily lives, doing what they enjoy the most.”
