Salford Red Devils sustainability cap

Salford Red Devils have confirmed that they will be under the restriction of the £1.2 million sustainability cap for their game against Castleford Tigers on Friday.

The sustainability cap has been reintroduced following the RFL Special Measures Committee determining at their meeting earlier today (March 4, 2025) that the cap is reimposed immediately.

The cap will be in place for the fixture against Castleford Tigers on Friday 7 March and will see restrictions on the players that the club can field in the game.

The restriction will follow the clubs delay of funding following the takeover with funds currently pending regulatory clearance.

A Salford Red Devils spokesperson continued: “CEO Chris Irwin and the new ownership will meet with the Special Measures Committee and RL Commercial tomorrow morning (March 5).”

The restriction was originally lifted for the fixture against Leeds Rhinos, after they were forced to field a weakened squad against St Helens in the 82-0 defeat, the largest winning margin in Super League history.

However, with the measures reimposed the club will be restricted once again by the sustainability cap, as the RFL stated: “Salford Red Devils have been asked to update and explain to the RFL’s Special Measures Committee and representatives from Rugby League Commercial at a meeting on Wednesday morning the current position regarding non-payment of staff, and how this will be rectified as well as a wider update on the club’s financial sustainability.”

Following the verdict handed by the RFL, the Red Devils have said: “To our fans, we sincerely apologise, we know this is not an easy time to be a Salford Reds fan.

“We apologise to you on behalf of our new ownership who have assured the Club that the consortium is working to rectify the financial situation and there will be no further issues.

“Thank you for your patience and support.”
