Young people around Salford are being encouraged to vote in the 2025 Youth Mayor elections.
The elections will run until February 28 2025 – and will allow young people in the community to have an influence to improve your community and the city.
The candidates will follow in the footsteps of previous Salford Youth Mayor’s and replace Paaniz Afrang who is the current 2023-24 Youth Mayor.
The position has been a part of the Salford community since 2015 – when Lewis Nelson started as the youth mayor.
Salford has a series of different youth roles including Young Mayor and Member of Youth Parliament. We also have representatives on Greater Manchester and North West of England youth forums.
The three candidates to be the new Salford Youth Mayor are Poppy England, Alex Hession and Betws Redgrave.
The candidates running have shared what they are passionate about ahead of the closing date of the election.
Candidate Poppy England is described on the voting page as wanting to support SEND playground and neuro diverse understanding.
Betws Redgrave is hoping to use her position to support green issues, local charities and young people.
Alex Hession’s priorities in the election include tackling knife crime, as well as using his influence to support green initiatives, inclusion of the disabled, and the promotion of patriotism.
Alex said: “My passion is to help as many people as I can in Salford. I truly want Salford to become a strong community for everyone.”
The Salford Youth Council works with children (aged 12-15) and young people (16-19) and is a group of 11–21-year-olds, as stated on the Salford CVS website, which said they “represent the voice of young people in Salford.”
“The young people work on campaigns which matter to young people, and are consulted on issues which effect young people, whilst creating positive stories of young people.”
Mark Greeenhalgh, the current deputy mayor of Salford and chair of Salford Youth Council, said: “If you are a young person in Salford, who lives and is educated in Salford, you can vote now.”
You can find out more about this on the Salford City Council website or social medias and the link for young people to vote is here.
