Salford audiences are set to be entertained as myths, magic and a shorter opera are set to come to the Lowry this March.

Guests of the Salford theatre will be amazed by two opera productions, and three different show will run between March 13 and 15.

Visitors of the Lowry will be able to witness the bold reimagining of Wagner’s classic opera, The Flying Dutchman.

The play has seen success, and has been ran by the critically-acclaimed director and designer team Annabel Arden and Joanna Parker, bringing a vital new reinterpretation of Wagner’s radical early masterpiece.

Displaced and dispossessed, the Dutchman’s crew are condemned to wander the seas for eternity.

Every seven years, fate offers them the chance to end this cycle of purgatory but, in a world where money, power and bureaucracy hold sway, it remains to be seen whether they will ever find shelter and sanctuary on land.

Responding to Opera North’s position as the only opera company in the country to have been awarded Theatre of Sanctuary status.  Arden, in collaboration with sound artist Dan Scott, has included the voices of those who, like the Dutchman himself, are without a homeland.

The thrilling production of Wagner’s opera the show will be directed by Garry Walker, and will include Robert Hayward as the Dutchman.

Clive Bayley makes a welcome return to the company as Senta’s father Daland, while Molly Barker from the Chorus of Opera North takes on the role of Mary.

The Flying Dutchman will feature on the Lowry stage on Saturday 15 March.

But that isn’t all for opera fans as James Brining’s popular production of The Magic Flute also returns after its hugely successful autumn tour.

The Magic Flute will be on the Lowry stage on March 13 and 14, and will serve as as a shorter daytime option for schools, families and anyone looking for all the magic, enchantment and drama of Mozart’s much-loved opera in a more condensed version.

As well as the production, younger audiences will be able to enjoy a shorter performance, The Magic Flute Lite, that will offer the same enchanted world and beautiful music as the full-length production.

The production will last under two hours and has been created especially for families, schoolchildren at Key Stages 2–4 and audience members who prefer a more bitesize operatic experience.

The Magic Flute Lite at 11am on Thursday 13 March, with both versions of the opera performance being sung in English with English subtitles.

Visitors of the Lowry will be able to be entertained by both The Flying Dutchman and The Magic Flute between March 13 and 15.

Tickets for all three shows are available now. Under 30s can come for £10 and first-timers are able to enjoy the view from some of the best seats in the house for just £20 each – and can be found here.
