A Salford masters student is fundraising to represent the UK in South Carolina, as he enters the College Disc Golf Competition.
Joshua Catchatoor, a Salford student currently doing his masters in Drama Production for Film, TV and, Digital Media, will be taking part in the annual contest in South Carolina.
The young student will be going to participate in disc golf, a rising sport in the UK, with the basic premise of golf, but instead of putting balls, players must throw discs into a metal basket.
A common feature of disc golf courses include obstructed fairways, difficult shots, and a high level of skill, making it a challenging undertaking for those involved.
Josh began his disc golf career as a fun past time with his friend from Latvia, Catchatoor said: “From my very first trip to Longford Park Disc Golf Course, in Stretford, Manchester, myself and several accompanying friends were completely hooked.”
The sport has been dominated in the American landscape since its creation in the 70s, where players are usually tasked with throwing discs from at least one hundred metres or further, often through tight gaps or over different hazards.
The course that they’re competing on is at Winthrop University, South Carolina, is the same location that the USA National Championship takes place.
Hosted in the same place as the prestigious event, it marks a proud moment for Joshua, as he is set to be representing the UK.
Ahead of the occasion Josh said: “I never really thought that was on the cards for me, this is a really, really good feeling.

“It’s a bit momentous, but I’m going to really enjoy myself out there as well and do my country proud and represent the UK as best I can.
“I haven’t been playing for as long as some of the Americans, because obviously it’s much more popular over there it’s much more widely known, Disc Golf came from America and it’s still a growing sport over here.”
To fund his trip a ‘GoFundMe’ has been created looking for sponsors to get him there, however, his fundraising comes with a twist.
The Salford Student is also running a 10km around Longford Park Disc Golf Course, in Stretford playing the course as he runs around.
Josh’s goal is to reach £700, and with the figure standing just over £250 he still has a little bit more to raise.
As he said: “The vast majority of this comes out of our own pocket, so as I’m a student it’s a bit difficult to raise the funds myself, so any donations, however small would be massively appreciated”.
The competition will be taking place on April 2 to April 5 with updates throughout his journey which can be found on his Instagram and Facebook via @el_catchatoor.
Joshua will be looking forward to travelling to South Carolina and will be looking to make the UK and Salford proud as he travels to the competition.
