A Salford theatre group is set to bring three unique plays to audiences that are written and directed by its members.
The Apeel Drama Group, from Little Hulton’s Little Theatre, will be debuting their new plays and hosting an “entertaining evening for everyone involved.”
The three new plays have been written and directed by members of the group and will be performed from the June 5 to June 7, 2025.
The selection of shows will have different themes focusing on the realities of an unhappy marriage, what to do with the belongings after the death of the patriarch of the family, and a troupe of women who take a girl’s trip and don’t get what they bargained for.
Auditions for the three one act plays, labelled “An APeel-ing Night” will be hosted on be held on Thursday 6 March with potential Callbacks on Sunday 9 March – with more information found here.
The first play to be hosted at the show is called Fumed Oak, written by Noel Coward and will be directed by Norman Beaver.
The play will highlight the realities of an unhappy marriage, and includes a harrowing decision being made about the future of his family.
The second production of the evening is The Dear Departed, by Stanley Houghton, and directed by, Gillian Roberts, the production will aim to be entirely made of Salford youth actors.
And will be a new comedy show that focuses on the characters trying to figure out what to do with the belongings after the death of the patriarch of the family.
The play will include the conflicts over ‘who gets what,’ and the impact the death has on his heirs.
Director of The Dear Departed, Gillian Roberts, said: “I joined Apeel Drama Group many years ago. My first experience of being in a play there was on the technical side-helping out with the lighting and sound for Two by Jim Cartwright.
“After this I plucked up the courage to audition for the part of the fairy Godmother in Jack and the Beanstalk.”
The final play is Costa Del Packet, by Anthony Booth and directed by Emily Kay.
Audiences will be able to experience a short farce about a troupe of women who take a girl’s trip and don’t get what they bargained for.
However, when the women arrive at the resort, they realise it hasn’t been built yet, and chaos ensues.
The three productions will be entered into the Greater Manchester Drama Federation, who will be hosting there 63rd annual festival from June 9 to 14 June.
Ahead of the preparations and performances, Connor Parkinson from APeel said: “It’s always a fun night out. It’s always a nice environment.
“It’s three short plays, and there’s three different stories, so it’s definitely value for money.
“Each play is done by an entirely different cast and an entirely different director, so they’re all extremely different. None of them will ever be similar because they’re all done in such unique ways by different people.
“This is the first time we’ve ever done it where it’s been purely performed by debut directors. I really think it’s important that we get an audience now to really see the work that’s gone into it.”
The show is set to take place in June, and guests will be able to purchase tickets for £10, with concession tickets costing £8. More information can be found here.
