A Salford building is a finalist for the Building of the Year award being shortlisted for its sustainable, net-zero architecture.
The eco-friendly EDEN building at New Bailey, is one of six buildings that have been shortlisted for the award that will be hosted by the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.
The award is being used to recognise a building’s contribution to Greater Manchester, having Europe’s largest living wall and is one of the UK’s ‘greenest’ buildings.
Architecture & Architectural Engineering lecturer at the University of Salford, Dr Maria Yioutani-Iacovides, praised the sustainability driven architecture, which was originally created to be a net-zero building.
She said: “A sustainable building is a combination of different things. You’re trying to achieve net-zero carbon, maximum daylight, natural ventilation and use sustainable materials.”
EDEN is a certified BREEAM Outstanding Building, which represents the very best within the built environment. Only the top 1% of UK new non-domestic buildings have the certification, which ensures they have the best quality – and the most sustainable – building materials and practises used within their construction.
The Salford building features a living wall, made up of 350,000 plants across 35,000 square metres.
The award is hosted by the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, and the winner will be announced on the 6 March.
The other five finalists include Rochdale Town Hall, Co-op Live, Stockport Interchange, North View- North Manchester General Hospital and Viadux Phase 1.
Diane Elebert-Morgan, Property & Construction Group Manager at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, said: “We have a great selection of shortlisted buildings from across Greater Manchester.
“We can all be proud that our area is home to such fantastic buildings, and I look forward to seeing the winner crowned in March.”
If successful, EDEN has plans for the future to join RHS Garden Bridgewater and the University of Salford’s Energy House 2.0.
