Salford Red Devils have shared a statement as they remain under the restrictions of the sustainability cap ahead of their opening Super League fixture against St Helens.
The selection restrictions for the opening weekend are due to the change of ownership and documents that are still yet to be approved by the RFL.
The new owners, were finalised last week with a consortium led by businessman Dario Berta, CEO of Matanel, an investment bank that specialises in real estate investment taking over the club.
The consortium completed a full 100% purchase of the club which has been approved by the CBS, and will see Chris Irwin as the club’s new Chief Executive Officer.
However, despite the promising move for the club, which has seen them clear all current club debt and layout a brand vision for the future – they will have to line up for the opening league fixture with reserve players.
The deal was completed on Friday 7 February, and the club had to field weakened squad of players in the Third Round of the the Challenge Cup.
And despite it being anticipated that these restrictions wouldn’t be in place for the first Super League weekend – it seems that the club will have to wait until they play Leeds Rhinos on February 22.
Following the news, a Salford Red Devils spokesperson said: “Salford Red Devils can confirm that the club will still be under the restrictions of the sustainability cap for this weekend’s opening Betfred Super League fixture against St Helens on Saturday 15 February.
“As such, the club will be fielding a team featuring predominantly reserve squad players this weekend.”

The club continued that the change of ownership, and all the documents have been submitted to the RFL for final approval and they are still ongoing.
Red Devils continued: “Although the club is disappointed to still be under the restriction, there is an understanding that the process requires the appropriate time to be completed and we are complying with each request as it is provided.”
Salford Red Devils continued: “It is hoped this will be completed in time for the first home fixture of the season against Leeds Rhinos on Saturday 22 February.”
