Irlam cemetery

Volunteers joined forces to help clean up the cemetery at St John’s Church in Irlam as a mark of respect to those whose graves lie there.

It has become a monthly event to help the gardener keep the grounds looking neat and tidy.

One volunteer, June Worsely said: “Being part of the community and the church, it’s important for the church that we keep the graveyard clean and volunteer.” June is a member of the church and has seen how filthy the graveyard can get.

She added that after COVID they had a group of 20 volunteers who filled up two skips full of rubbish.

The deputy Reverend, Jean Dodd, volunteered herself and really appreciated the community response from the volunteers.

Jean said: “It’s brilliant. Often there are different people who come along. We usually have a good team who turn up regularly, but it is always good to see fresh faces such as today.”

One resident, Rachael Blake, who has lived in Irlam her whole life, has seen all the good contributions that the church has provided to the community.

Rachael added that she has been to a lot of weddings, funerals and baptisms at the church and they always provide a great service.

She expressed gratitude for the local community’s response during the church’s time of need.

Jean said they also offer other opportunities for the people to get together and help clean up the Irlam cemetery pathways.

“We do welcome Wednesdays, toddler groups on Wednesdays. I do a walking group on Mondays.”
