Plans to transform a former 66-room Salford care home into a girls’ school for three to 16-year-olds have been approved.

The charity Beis Malka has won permission to convert Laburnum Court off Priory Grove, Broughton.

More than 328 pupils will move from their current location, at 399-401 Bury New Road, to the 0.8-acre site around 500m away.

The new site will see 27,500 sq ft of floorspace freed up for educational use, providing increased teaching and non-teaching space for all ages.

The additional space will also provide larger classrooms, to offer a better learning environment.

The school will also provide access for students with disabilities – as the school’s current premises lack disabled access and are reliant on temporary accommodation.

Salford Councillor Arnold Saunders, who represents Kersal and Broughton Park, said: “There is a need for more school places in the growing local Jewish community. There are sufficient care home places locally.”

The Broughton area of Salford is home to one of the UK’s largest orthodox Jewish communities outside London.

Cllr Saunders continued: “The people behind this application are highly respected members of the local community.”

Fellow ward Councillor Ari Leitner said: “The property at Laburnum Court is more energy efficient than the school’s current location, as well as less of a maintenance liability.

“This will have a positive effect on the children’s health, a matter which the school puts a great emphasis on.

“I believe the schoolchildren, current and future, will benefit greatly from the school moving to the site at Laburnum Court, where they will continue to receive an improved education, one which the City of Salford can be proud of.”

Planning agent and architect Atelier MB assisted applicant Yitzi Luftig with the application, with others on the project team including Tyrer Ecological Consultants, RS Acoustic Engineering, and Murray Tree Consultancy.
