The John Gilbert’s pub in Worsley offers a selection of craft ales including their very own self-brewed beer, Level Head IPA, which is gaining a lot of popularity.
Under the recent management of Steve Leatherbarrow, 32, the pub strives to be an exciting community hub; whether it’s hosting its iconic quiz night to live music, there is a lot to be enjoyed with a bite to eat.

I spoke to the manager Steve Leatherbarrow, 32, to hear his own opinion of their Level Head IPA. “It’s a real drinking beer,” Steve said. “It’s been so popular…it’s even made its way into supermarkets now”.
I mean I personally found it to be strong competition for Beavertown, offering a similar crisp, refreshing and fruity taste that fans can most definitely appreciate. Their own custom-designed glass for it is a very nice touch too.
Steve, who took over the pub just before Hallowe’en last year, has worked hard to ensure John Gilbert feels welcoming to anyone and everyone.
“I’ve been here a few months now, but I want it to feel like a place where everyone can just relax and have a good time,” he said. The interior is warm and inviting, featuring artwork that’s a nod to Steve’s roots in Liverpool, and it gives the space a unique and nice personal touch.

Taking place every Wednesday, one of the pub’s most popular events is the weekly quiz night. For just £1 per ticket, it’s an affordable and fun night out, but it’s become so popular that reservations are highly recommended.
“It’s always packed out,” Steve admitted. “The more people we get, the better the prizes are. Things like air fryers, grills, and all sorts of practical stuff. We even do themed quizzes for holidays like Christmas and Hallowe’en”.
For sports fans, the pub has a massive outdoor screen for live broadcasts, and Steve is keen to make it the go-to spot for big games, like plans to improve the outdoor space with a BBQ, ready for the summer months. While last year’s Euros were the first major event to feature outdoor sports viewing, they’re hoping to build on that this year:
“We’ve only had the sports set-up for less than a year, but it’s definitely catching on. We even offer 10% off drinks an hour before and after the games,” he explained.
Plus, John Gilbert offers some great deals for students, with discounts available Monday through Friday. There are also random offers that pop up, such as the chance to grab a free pint through the Dusk app. This is in line with the pub’s effort to keep things affordable for regulars and newcomers alike.
On top of all that, John Gilbert has live music every Friday from 9pm, with local talents and cover bands filling the space. Steve said: “We’ve got a mix of music, some solos and duos, that mostly do all covers, tributes like Oasis are popular, but we’re also open to new acts. If they’re good and a good fit, we’ll have them.”

With its mix of regular events, a big selection of drinks – particularly their brewed-in-house craft ale – and friendly atmosphere, John Gilbert has a lot to offer. With plans for the summer to look forward to, it is certainly something to keep an eye out for.
