A special memorial was held in Salford for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.
For the anniversary, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford church hosted a special theme for the memoriam, ‘For a Better Future.’
The theme allowed people of Salford to learn from the past and build toward a better future.
It has been used this to help with the future, as Lily from Diocese of Salford said: “In today’s politics I think there is a lot of stuff that relates to it, and if we don’t remember what happened it will happen again.”
This year marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, which led to one of the darkest chapters in human history.
Between 1940 and 1945, more than one million Jews, religious leaders, disabled persons, and other innocent victims were viciously and mercilessly executed in Auschwitz.
On the Diocese of Salford website they said: “Our theme this year encourages us all to take an active role in building this future; we can speak up against Holocaust and genocide denial and distortion.
“We can challenge prejudice; we can encourage others to learn about the Holocaust and more recent genocides.”
For the anniversary, the Diocese of Salford have been working with the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, to raise money and awareness for those who have had their or their families lives changed.
This has been significant for the community of Salford, with a Jewish community with approximately 8 synagogues and several Jewish schools.
Action has been taken to support families, and remind the future generations of Salford of the darkest period in human history.
This memorial day was celebrated worldwide, but is a high priority for the UK.
On the memorial day, the royal family with the Prince William and Princess Kate attending the ceremony in London.
At the ceremony William stated “We also remember those survivors, who have lived with the scars both mental and physical.”
The world is a completely different place now than it was 80 years ago, and the support for the Holocaust Memorial Day is a reminder of what can never happen again.
