A Salford woman has raised over £10,000 whilst aiming to tackle a half marathon every day in January for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Stevie Morris from Salford will be running and walking 640km throughout January, to raise money and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
Inspired by her mum who was recently diagnosed in December of 2024 after a period of ill health, Stevie aimed to raise the initial target of £6,400 but has already smashed the target.
Fundraising £10,000 so far, Stevie spoke on the challenge she said: “In January I am running, hiking, hobbling 640km in honour of my Mum (age 64) who has sadly been diagnosed with MND.
“This is such a painful time for my family, but I hope this challenge shows my Mum love and provides as much awareness and support to MNDA as possible.”
And the fundraiser has already been a huge physical and mental challenge, having to battle wind, rain and snow.
Despite the weather, she continues to push on through the cold, wet and pain to complete it,
She continued: “Nobody would wish this on anybody and I hope what I am doing is a small drop in the ocean to finding a cure so other families don’t have to go through this in the future.
“This challenge averages at just shy of a half marathon a day during the most miserable month of the year, but I know this discomfort is nothing compared to what my Mum, and others like her, will have to endure.”
MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, with six people diagnosed with the disease per day in the UK – just under 2,200 a year.
Starting on January 1 2025, Stevie has been joined by a number of supporters who have helped complete various distances.
The money will also be used to support local people who are living with the disease and their families across the area, ensuring that no one living with the incurable disease faces it alone.
As Stevie continued: “I’d love to get as many people involved as possible, so we can all show gratitude for moving our bodies in ways that we don’t all have the privilege to do.”
Raising over £10,000 so far, the MND Association Regional Fundraiser, Dominic McDonough said: “This is an absolutely amazing challenge and Stevie is absolutely smashing it.
“She has gone above and beyond and is raising an incredible amount which will make a massive difference and help us to help those living with this terrible disease.”
Dominic continued: “It means so much to us and I would like to thank her and everyone who is supporting her. We really do appreciate the sore legs and the hard work that she is putting in.”
The physical and mental challenge will continue for the duration of January – and you can donate to Stevie’s fundraiser for the MND Association – and can be found here.
