Plans have been submitted for a new state-of-the-art Acoustics Building, which would bring world-class research facilities to Salford.
The proposed1,300m2 building will be a part of the creation of Salford Crescent’s Innovation zone following work commencing on Salford Rise in September.
The Innovation zone will form one aspect of the wider £2.5bn, 240-acre Crescent Salford masterplan being delivered.
The Acoustics Building has been proposed by the Crescent partnership, comprising the University of Salford, Salford City Council and ECF (formerly the English City Fund) – a joint venture between Homes England, Legal & General and Muse.
The Crescent partnership aim to bring together industry, education, and the local community by creating more than 3,000 homes, 1m sq ft of office, retail, and leisure space, a new multi-model transport hub.
The new building will be created on the 29-acre Crescent Innovation area, north of the university’s Peel Park campus, and developed on a former industrial site on Lissadel Street.
If approved the construction for the new facility will begin in summer 2025 and looked to be completed by spring 2027.
Mayor of Salford Paul Dennett said: “I am delighted to see that the planning application for the new University of Salford Acoustics Building, which will sit at the heart of the Crescent Innovation zone, has now been submitted.
“This is a fantastic step forward for the University’s world-leading research and a testament to our shared ambitions for a more sustainable future, as this development will set a benchmark for environmental performance.”
Dennett continued: “It is great to see such positive development momentum across Crescent Innovation, following the completion of the North of England Robotics Innovation Centre and work which is now on the ground to deliver Salford Rise.
“These developments are key to driving innovation, boosting our local economy, and shaping a greener, more prosperous Salford.”
The environmental factor will be beneficial being in line with the latest sustainability standards, with the all-electric building targeting a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.
The state-of-the-art facility will also look to utilise low-energy and low-carbon technologies to minimise energy consumption and reduce the carbon footprint.
The proposed building will also aim to transform the area and play a key role in Salford’s development and will be the next stages following from Salford Rise.
As Max Bentham, Development Director of ECF, said: “The regeneration of this currently underutilised area will help to enhance Salford’s global reputation for industry and innovation.
“The facilities within Crescent Innovation will be world-leading places to innovate and collaborate, bringing education and industry together to help shape the future of Salford.”
For the development of the facility, Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed as the main contractor to deliver the Acoustics Building.
The construction company previously collaborated with the university on the creation of multiple new learning environments, including the North of England Robotics Innovation Centre.
As Steven Gregory, Morgan Sindall Construction’s area director for the North West said: “Over recent years it has been our privilege to deliver several world-class new facilities for the staff and students at this brilliant university.
“We are thrilled to be renewing our relationship on this brilliant new project.”
He continued: “Through its investment in its campus, the University has demonstrated that it is focused on using the technologies of tomorrow to help improve the world around us.”
