Salford City rounded off 2024 with a win as they beat struggling Morecambe 1-0 to climb into the League Two play-off places.
Half-time substitute Matty Lund stepped off the bench to score the game’s solitary goal, as the Ammies defied a stubborn Morecambe performance to move up to sixth before the turn of the year.
Salford edged the opening exchanges of a scrappy first-half and came close to opening the scoring after 15 minutes when centre-back Curtis Tilt headed over from eight yards out.
Shrimps’ goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne was called into action soon after, first fielding Hakeeb Adelakun’s deflected effort before reacting quickly to save Ryan Watson’s goal-bound header.
Following a sustained spell of Salford pressure and valiant Morecambe resistance, the away side almost took the lead against the run of play on 43 minutes when winger Gwion Edwards came inches away from turning Ben Tollit’s teasing delivery home from close range.
Looking for improvement against the Football League’s bottom side, Karl Robinson turned to his bench with Matty Lund brought on for Junior Luamba.
The veteran midfielder made an instant impact as he arrived late in the box to power Jon Taylor’s whipped delivery past Burgoyne.

As Morecambe chased the game and began to commit more men forward in search of an equaliser, substitute Connor McAleny exploited growing spaces between the Shrimps’ defensive lines. But the 32-year-old was denied by a last-ditch goal-line block by Yann Songo’o.
Salford believed they had put the game out of Morecambe’s reach when Kylian Kouassi headed home from a corner, but the goal was ruled out for a foul.
Karl Robinson’s men fought through a late Morecambe onslaught as the away side bombarded the box with crosses to extend their unbeaten run in League Two to four games.
