Salford City strengthened their play-off ambitions with a convincing 3-0 win over Barrow on Boxing Day.
Luke Garbutt, Tyrese Fornah and Kylian Kouassi were all on target as Karl Robinson’s side recorded their third successive League Two victory, following on from their battling 2-0 triumph over struggling Accrington and 3-0 dismantling of Notts County.
After a closely contested opening 20 minutes, Luke Garbutt set the tone for Salford’s accomplished win when his inswinging free-kick deceived Paul Farman and found the top left corner.
The Ammies doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark when Tyrese Fornah waltzed onto Matty Lund’s headed layoff to steer in the second.
For the third game running, Karl Robinson’s men stood firm amid opposition pressure and limited Barrow to shots from distance in the first-half. Attacking midfielder Kian Spence came closest to halving the away team’s deficit before the break when his freekick flew narrowly wide.
The Bluebirds started the second-half brightly and thought they had reduced the arrears when Elliot Newby drilled home shortly after the interval, but cheers from away supporters were cut short by a raised offside flag – barely visible in the thickening fog.
With Barrow’s chances of a second-half comeback beginning to fade in the gloomy conditions, all-action midfielder Fornah set about dictating play and leading Salford’s search for a third. His curling effort from the edge of the box was expertly tipped around the post by Farman.
In the dimming light, substitute Kylian Kouassi scored The Ammies’ third, and ended the game as a contest, on 80 minutes when he outmuscled former Salford defender Theo Vassell and rolled the ball calmly past Farman.
Salford ended the game with ten men as Fornah was shown his second yellow for a reckless challenge of Spence. He will miss The Ammies’ next game against Morecambe on December 29.
