Salford City suffered a defeat against Gillingham this weekend with the two sides being separated by a solitary goal.
The Ammies travelled to Kent in strong form, going into the fixture without a defeat in the last four games in all competition.
The away side were setting up against Gillingham who were also walking into the tie needing a win after suffering back to back defeats.
With the result finishing 1-0, Salford City will be wondering how they didn’t get anything from the fixture.
The Ammies dominated the possession holding 68% of the ball – and it wasn’t a case of the away side just holding onto the ball, firing 10 shots towards Gillingham’s net.
However, despite the numerous attempts at the home sides net, Salford struggled to convert their chances.
The best effort from Salford came in the first half, with Cole Stockton being played through one-on-one, being unable to lift the ball over goalkeeper Glenn Morris.
And it was the inability to convert their chances that punished Karl Robinson’s side in the second half.
Three minutes into the second half, Gillingham were able to win a corner, with the ball being lofted into the box.
It seemed that Storm Darragh was having its impact on the fixture, the ball was fired into the box with goalkeeper Matty Young missing the defensive punch.
The ball that dropped at the feet of Salford’s Tyrese Fornah who failed to clear, before being dispossessed by the Gillingham midfielder who was happy to capitalise on the opportunity.
Crossed into the box, the ball was able to find its way into the path of Jayden Clarke who was able to convert his effort through the crowded area to put the home side into the lead.
And the home side could have doubled their lead, with the Gillingham’s Jack Nolan picking the ball up by the halfway line, before firing a shot off at Matty Young.
The young keepers save fell into the path of Jayden Clarke once again who was able to pick up the rebound and fire into the net – however was denied by the assistant referees flag.
With the fortune of the flag, the Ammies were offered the chance to get back into the game with substitute Kylian Kouassi breaking the defensive line, although his effort was once again denied by the Gillingham goalkeeper.
