A Salford charity will be hosting learn with lunch sessions to help improve the health of older people in the area.
The new free lunch sessions will be led by Age Friendly Salford and run by Age UK, Inspiring Communities Together, and Salford CVS every Tuesday to educate older people in promoting wellbeing and mindfulness, while avoiding malnutrition and dehydration, falls and scams.
The learn with lunch sessions will be hosted across five weeks to get integrating into their local communities.
Nicola, a project member, said: “It kind of was a mixed bag in some ways as to how we were trying to attack three different problems in one go. It’s been running for two years, but before that, it was part of the nutrition and hydration programme.
“We’ve had probably about 400 people or more come on the courses over the last two years.”
She added: “There’s always difficulties because it’s a funded piece of work, so you never know how long you’re going to be funded for and pop the project on for. It’s three organizations and can be logistically difficult to manage the different partners.
“Obviously everyone has a different way of working, which is fine, but maybe you’ve got three and you need one approach. It can be a little bit tricky to manage, but we get by, we get through, we’re quite a good team of people, and we get on quite well.”
Greater Manchester House Authority recognised that older people, specifically those with falls, were often very malnourished.
Following this discovery, Age Friendly Salford thought it would be good to get them together to socialise, learn about some topic needed as they get older, while reducing the hospital admissions from falls.
As Nicola said: “When you get people that have lived a life and haven’t realized they are entitled to certain benefits and health, and for you to give them that information, when they come back to say that has actually made a huge difference and changed their life it is such an amazing feeling.
“Hearing that the things we’ve done for them were life-changing, you honestly can’t beat that as a feeling. The sense of purpose and feeling of worthwhileness you get from working in this kind of sector and doing this kind of work, you don’t get anywhere else.”
