A Salford resident has launched a new hiking group that aim to raise vital funds for a mental health charity.
The fundraiser has been launched under the group name ‘GM Social Hikers’ and will aim to raise money for Mind Manchester.
Mind is an independent local charity that supports over seven thousand children and adults a year.
During Mind’s 2022/23 annual report the charity shared they had spent 83p per pound supporting those with mental health problems.
The fundraiser was launched by Joel Shevlin, the founder of GM Social Hikers and was used to create a “friendly, laid-back and social hiking group.”
He continued: “I love hiking, have experience with leading hikes and it would be a great way to meet people and also raise money for charity.”
So far, the charity have been able to contribute £154 for Mind in just 23 days and already boasts over two thousand members on Facebook.
The group are encouraging people to get involved, going on hikes in a variety of scenic locations that make for an enjoyable walk whilst keeping fit and encourage participants to socialise.
The hiking group has proven to be popular among those who want to prioritise their mental health.
One member, a military veteran aiming to mix with others, said: “What I particularly like about it is that people are meeting for walks, but there appeared to be a social aspect to it as well.”
The group is full of like-minded individuals that are welcome to join in the hikes that are typically held on a weekly basis – for more information on the group and their activities it can be found here.
