History has been made this weekend as Salford City have advanced into the third round of the FA Cup for the first time. 

Salford City were able to advance to the third round draw, after beating Cheltenham Town 2-0 last Saturday.

The result means that the Ammies could be drawn Premier League opposition, with the draw being held at Old Trafford tonight (November 2).

Karl Robinson’s side were able to secure the win, with Frankie Okoronkwo and Cole Stockton scoring the goals to separate the two sides.

The Ammies were able to secure their position with 18-year-old Matty Young saved another penalty which booked their place into the next round.

Following the historical moment for the club, Karl Robinson spoke after the game, he said: “This competition has been very good to us. Today to go the furthest ever we’ve gone in the competition is really good.

“We have to be better week in, week out. This is just another challenge on that journey, I just hope now we are lucky in the draw.”

While many lower league fans will be hoping to have the visit of Premier League opposition for a potential ‘giant-killing’.

But the club may also be hoping for lower league opposition to continue their run in the competition.

As Karl Robinson said: “We just have to wait and see if we get a bit of luck. We just have to make sure that we are competitive in the league.”

The historical cup run for Salford has continued to prove their is still magic in the FA Cup, with the Ammies already making history breaking the fielding the youngest ever player in the competition.

The 15-year-old, Marshall Hey featured in the first round of the FA Cup against Shrewsbury Town and was able etch his name in the history books of the competition that is 153 years old.

Karl Robinson’s side are currently 15th in the league and will be hoping to turn their fortune after a years in League Two, and will hope to excite fans last winning silverware in 2019 winning the EFL Trophy.

The third round draw includes all 44 teams from the premier league and the championship, as well as the 20 sides that won their games in the second round. Salford City FC are ball number 45.
