National Literacy Trust wrapping books for Boothstown children - via National Literacy Trust

Salford residents will be able to attend a storytelling session in Boothstown this weekend that aims to encourage children to read.

The session will be hosted at Boothstown Community Centre on Sunday1 December, and will aim to be the perfect way to start the festive season.

The storytelling session will commence from 4pm and will run until 6pm, and will hope to be involved in the fun and free family fun day out.

The session will be held due to the National Literacy Trusts most recent research that shared that children’s enjoyment of reading has reached an all-time low.

The trust has found that  almost 2 out of 3 children and young people in the North West do not enjoy reading during their free time.

And this has worsened with areas of high poverty seeing 1 in 8 children not owning a single book at home

However, in the North West that figure stands at 11.7%.

To combat this statistic volunteer Literacy Champions have been wrapping 228 books earlier this week ahead of the event in Boothstown.

This will that the trust has organised a total of 346 books to gift to Salford families this festive season.

The champion volunteers have been made up of people in the local area who are willing to support help to share activities, events, and resources to empower parents and carers.

Following the wrapping of the presents, Martha O’Brien, Manager for the National Literacy Trust in Salford said: “Our team in Salford, and our growing network of Literacy Champions, aims to inspire children to read for pleasure, something we know has a direct impact on how they do at school.

We’ll be supporting a range of events with book gifting this festive season, hosting storytelling sessions with Salford Libraries, encouraging children to take part in a range of festive arts and craft activities, and of course, take home a free book!”

This event at the Boothstown Community Centre will aim to help and support young children in the community, and will not be the only one to take place.

Future opportunities for families to pick up a free book include Eccles College Winter Wonderland on 14 Dec from 10am-12pm, at Warton and Cleggs Lane Church from 10am-12pm on 20 December.

As well as the CommUNITY Little Hulton on 20 December from 12:30-2:30pm.
