Salford Lads Club has now been saved from permanent closure after successfully surpassing their £250,000 before the end of the month.
In addition to the £273,000 that was raised within just six weeks, securing a permanent endowment fund – known as a ‘legacy fund’ – is what will be next for the widely loved and recognisable club.
The rise in costs has been felt nationwide, and the club has mentioned that it is difficult to care for and maintain the 121-year-old Edwardian house.
Projected outgoings for the coming 12 months are £394,700, which is strikingly over half of £160,000 – their income last year.
The £1 million legacy fund is estimated to see up to a stable £40,000 – £50,000 in returns a year, providing a long-term solution to the club’s future and legacy.
The legacy fund will remove the need for such desperate and urgent appeals, as a secure income stream will aid the club in making better informed decisions, investments and plans.
Leslie Holmes, who has spent over 20 years as project manager at the club, shared: “It should be a world heritage site!”
Opened in 1903 for working lads, in 2024 the club remains open for young people and proud to be a clear symbol of northern working-class culture – people travelling as far as Australia to see where Stephen Wright captured one of Manchester’s iconic bands, The Smiths.
The famous youth institution has provided support to Salford’s youth since it first opened and has helped countless generations of boys and girls by offering activities, sport and exhibitions.
A former member and now volunteer, Blaine, stated: “I see kids on the estate who have to go through tough situations, and the club cheers them up.
“It gives them freedom to express themselves. If the club was to close, I don’t think I’d find the same joy anywhere else.”
With funding secured for the future of Salford Lads Club there will be a lot of optimism and excitement as it has ensured that the lights of the youth centre will never go out.
