Debris build up at Salford Quays from Storm Bert

A large amount of debris which built up around Salford Quays following Storm Bert is set to be cleaned.

Storm Bert saw water levels rise along the River Irwell with multiple pathways and flooded over the weekend, leaving tons of rubbish in the Quays.

This week the clean-up was due to begin.

Salford City Council said on social media: “We are aware of the influx of debris following Storm Bert.

“Our teams along with Bilway Marine are responding on site.”

A spokesperson said: “Five rivers drain into the Quays and any natural and other debris in those rivers is washed downstream, particularly after heavy rain which we had over the weekend.

Ownership of the waterways is split between the council, Peel and private owners. We always clear our areas as quickly as possible and encourage other water owners to do the same.”

Over the weekend, the Met Office had predicted between 20 and 40mm rain fairly widely, with some areas of the country hit with 50-90mm.

On Saturday night fast flowing water could be seen moving down the river, with pathways by Regent Road being completely swamped.

The areas worst affected by the storm debris were around Salford Watersports Centre, and the North Bay by the Alchemist and Lowry theatre.

The Met Office today gave the all clear saying “there is no longer a risk of flooding in the area.”

The water levels have since dropped, however, residents are warned to continue to take care on waterside roads and footpaths and not to put themselves in unnecessary danger.
