This December will see the return of the free Lightwaves show to Salford Quays for the eleventh consecutive year.

The Lightwaves at Salford Quays will offer a free light show made of 14 art exhibitions letting visitors and families explore Salford by night.

The free light show will run from Thursday 5 December until Sunday 8 December, and will light up the waterways from 4pm-10pm.

The exhibitions theme will centre on light, and how it can transform the waterside area at night time with visitors experiencing light, sound, and technology.

Five of the 14 exhibitions will newly commissioned works that will be held in a world premiere in Salford.

Ahead of the event, Kate Doyle, head of programming for Quays Culture, said: “The team at Quays Culture are truly excited by the program of artworks curated for what will be the 11th edition of Lightwaves Salford.

“Year on year the event delights audiences of all ages and we’re certain that 2024 will be no exception.”

She continued: “The program is one of our best yet and we’re looking forward to seeing visitors’ reactions to our thought-provoking new commissions.

“In the dark winter months, human beings are instinctively drawn to light and the chance to gather together with other people.

“All are welcome to Lightwaves Salford to experience the joy of light art!” Kate added.

And all though the show will run until December 8, one of the exhibitions, Monad, will be extended to 22nd December “thanks to the generous support of Media City.”

As Caroline Aikman, Director of Marketing shared: “Lightwaves is a highlight of the winter season at MediaCity and for the first time this year we’re delighted to support the extended run of the show-stopping Monad art installation on the waterfront.

“It promises to create a sense of magic in the run up to Christmas and will inspire creatives from the region and beyond.”

No tickets are required for the event visitors just have to take a walk around the Quays and discover the events for themselves.

Maps of the trail will be available online, though visitors can explore Lightwaves using any route they like, wandering guests will also have access to food and drink options that will be available from KargoMKT.
