A Salford boxer is looking to take the next step in his career as he laces up the gloves for an English title this November.
The boxer representing the city of Salford, Lewis Wood, 30, will be stepping into the ring with Earby’s Josh Holmes for the vacant English Super Featherweight title in November.
The fighter currently holds a record of 8-2 and is expecting a sell-out crowd at the Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Trafford Park.
But this fight on paper is set to be one of the toughest yet of Woods’s career, with Holmes boasting a record of 15-0.
Holmes currently holds the perfect record, but that doesn’t scare the Salfordian, as Lewis Wood is hoping to use this fight as a stepping stone to the next step in his career.
“Every fight now is a step up in level, I won the title then defended it against two undefeated kids, Josh again is another undefeated kid it is his first title fight, I will have the experience over him in that sense.”
Lewis is looking to put on a show in front of his home town fans and is convinced he has what it takes to get the job done against Holmes.
The Salford-born boxer has never given up on his goal of becoming the best in the world, as he said: “It is exciting when you first turn professional. This is what you are in it for to get these title shots and keep progressing up the ladder.
“I am looking forward to it. I can’t wait.”

To reach that target of becoming the best in the world, improving boxers need to surround themselves with the best, which is what he has found at the Collyhurst and Moston gym.
The Salford fighter continued: “Any mistake I make, he is on me.
“He is a perfectionist; he is getting the best out of me all the time. I have been having sparing with Zelfa, who is world (championship) level. Preparations have been good I am raring to go.
“The level I am fighting at, and he is at is different, it is good to get the work in with him I am learning all the time in with him, any mistake I make and makes me think twice over going it again.”
Lewis continued: “It’s in my own gym, I have a world championship fighter in my own gym! You can’t get better preparation than that.”
The fighter seems mighty confident, and this was backed up by his manager and trainer, Pat Barrett, who said: ” “He has just had some good sparing with Zelfa, he is fighting a kid who is 15- 0. He doesn’t know what it is like to lose.
“Lewis has relicensed the central area to move for the English title. He is in a very great frame of mind for it.”
He continued: “We turned him pro with us we took him from nothing to be where he is he has been central area, defended it and beaten two undefeated kids on his way up.
“This is going to be the third he isn’t afraid of that.”
The environment he is training in will be vital for his development, as his manager, Pat Barrett, has already helped guide various belts back to Salford.
Pat added: “He has lost himself, so he knows how to lose.
“He has had two losses; there isn’t anything he hasn’t already been through.
“It is a step up it’s the next level, but he is ready for it let’s do it.”
Lewis is leading the way for Salford boxers and will look to reach the top of the sport and serve as an inspiration.
Wood added: “There isn’t really anyone from Salford as we speak at this sort of level, maybe one or two. It feels good, but I intended to bring this title back.
“I am bringing this English title back to Salford; I can’t wait!”
