The results of the Eccles by-election were announced with Labour Councillor Lisa Muir declared the winner – winning by over 500 votes.
The by-election that was held on Thursday 31 October following the resignation of Labour councillor, Sharmina August in September.
The newly elected councillor, Lisa Muir was able to win the position following a turnout of 16.46%, with 1872 votes casted and 16 ballot papers rejected.
Cllr. Lisa Muir was able to secure 951 of the votes, with her closest rival being Daniel Andrew Whitehouse, the representative of the Conservative Party securing 426 votes.
Sara Laing, candidate for the Green Party scored 261 votes, Ian Alexander McKinlay received 142 votes for the Liberal Democrats, and Sally Griffiths from the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition collected 76 votes.
Following the appointment of Lisa Muir she shared her feelings after winning, she said: “Huge thanks to all the residents who returned their postal ballots, or got out and voted on what ended up a cold, wet Halloween night.
“I’m honoured and humbled that you’ve put your trust in me to be your local representative.”
She continued: “As a local campaigner and activist I will ensure you are heard and represented within the council chamber.
“I will be making myself familiar with and engaging with community groups across Eccles.
“I’m keen to talk to more residents and businesses about the things that matter to them the most.”
Cllr. Lisa will now be hoping to deliver the same amount of success as she had done with the Monton Village Community Association, where she made a lot of benefits to her community.
In her role as the chair, she was able to demonstrate and organise the Monton Christmas Light show, which was a success.
She continued: “Really looking forward to getting started with work of positive change within our community.
“Working alongside Councillor McCusker and Councillor Tetteh, I’ll get up to speed with the happenings of Eccles.”
Cllr. Muir also mentioned that she aimed to get the next town centre public consultation planned, allowing residents to discuss everything, and answer all questions.
She was very grateful for the support she received throughout her campaign with even Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett, and Michael Wheeler MP of Worsley and Eccles joining her efforts.
Cllr. Muir said: “In addition, I’m very much looking forward to working with our mayors and local MP to drive positive change locally in the interests of our residents.”
Following the success of the by-election Eccles Labour shared on social media their support, a spokesperson said: “We are delighted that Lisa Muir was voted in yesterday, in the Eccles By-Elections.
“We are truly grateful for the support from activists and our community for placing your trust in Lisa.”
