Morrissey donates £50,000 to Salford Lads Club

The Smiths frontman Morrissey has stepped into action to help keep the iconic Salford Lads Clubs doors open.

The singer-songwriter heard the calls from the iconic youth centre, and donated £50,000 towards the urgent fundraiser.

The donation comes at a much needed time, with Salford Lads Club needing £250,000 before the end of November to avoid closure.

Morrissey along with his other band mates from The Smiths were responsible for the venues worldwide fame, with the iconic building being well-known for appearing in the album cover inner-sleeve, The Queen Is Dead in 1986.

The image has made Salford Lads Club recognisable around the world, and has allowed the Grade II listed building to become a treasured landmark.

The band’s influence has even proved to be well received, having a named after them “The Smiths Room”.

And it remains clear that the building still holds a strong place in Morrissey’s heart, with the £50,000 donation taking the total in touching distance of the quarter of million pound goal.

And this isn’t the first time the famous singer-songwriter has donated to the Salford Lads & Girls Club, donating £20,000 in 2007 to help repair the roof.

In response to the generation donation, the youth centre shared on social media: “We’re so grateful for Morrissey’s recent support, which has a powerful impact on the youth here at Salford Lads & Girls Club.

“This contribution is more than just a donation; it’s a recognition of the vital role we play in helping young people find identity, belonging, and pride in their community.”

They continued: “Morrissey’s support strengthens this mission and reminds us all how essential it is to empower the next generation.”

The youth centre on Coronation Street in Ordsall has been a a safe space for the community for over 121 years, offering a wide range of activities for children.

However, with the overwhelming amount of support to keep their doors open, the youth centre ended their statement by saying: “Thank you to everyone who believes in the power of youth work.

“Together, we’re helping young people in Salford grow, thrive, and carry forward a legacy of pride and resilience.”

The goal now stands at over £217,000, and grows ever closer to their intended goal to keep their doors open.

The donation from Morrissey isn’t the only major amount of support, with Salford City Council donating £100,000, as well as support from fellow artist Graham Nash who donated £10,000.

As well as the local effort from local brewery, Seven Brothers, who have released a new lager, Salford Lads Club Helles lager, with £1.50 from each can sold going to the campaign.

However, with all the support this donation from The Smiths icon, Morrissey, might just ensure that the Salford Lads Clubs lights never go out.
