Salford Lionesses have advanced into the next round of the League Cup after securing a dominant 4-2 win against Crewe Alexandra.

The NWWRFL League Cup fixture took place at St Ambrose Barlow RC High School, that saw the Lionesses secure victory on the Sunday afternoon with an impressive display.

Despite the impressive victory, the Lionesses saw them having to fight their way back into the tie after going a goal down.

Crewe Alexandra were able to take the lead within 26 minutes, through the effort of Bex Guy.

And had to battle to keep their cup ambitions alive, and they were fortunate to do so before the half-time break.

Ten minutes after conceding the Lionesses were able to level the scoring, Caitlin Mahaffey was able to hold up the play on the left waiting before space opened up on the wing to shoot.

The Salford number 14 was able to rescue the Lionesses before the break.

However, it seemed that the Lionesses were able to get a great grip on the game, as five minutes after the break they were able to take the lead.

Some neat combination play was enough to open up the Crewe defence, as Jein was able to slip through a brilliant pass into the box where Laura Tobin.

The forward was able to take the ball under control with an excellent touch before rolling it into the bottom corner.

And the goal flurry continued, as three minutes later the Lionesses were able to take the lead with Evie Brookes tapping in Caitlin Mahaffey’s ball across the box.

With an hour played, and leading 3-1 it looked as though Salford were going to be in cruise control and book themselves into the next round.

Although this didn’t look to be the case, with Crewe securing a lifeline late on.

In the 83rd minute of the game, Alexandra player Jess Sheridan was able to setup Emilia Edwards from an indirect free kick.

The late goal put some pressure on the Lionesses, however, it seems that they were able to brush it off with Caitlin Mahaffey smashing it in from 12 yards.

The 92nd minute and fourth goal of the fixture was enough for the Lionesses to extend their two goal lead.

The club will now look towards the next round of the cup with their defeated opposition, Crewe, moving into the league plate.

With the victory secured, the Lionesses will now have to turn their attention to Tranmere Rovers Women at home this Sunday.
