birthday

A care at home group have put together a JustGiving page to raise money for a new recliner chair for a 108th birthday celebration.

The fundraiser has been set up by Manaaki Care at Home, who will be hoping to buy Salford-born woman, Dorothy, a new pressure controlled recliner chair.

The goal for the pressure controlled chair is to raise £1,300, that will allow Dorothy to sleep comfortably at night.

The fundraiser is also encouraging people all over the world to send her birthday cards as she reaches this amazing milestone.

The wonderful lady has already received over 240 cards, even coming from Amsterdam and as far as Australia.

The birthday has been used to bring the community together and support her as they want to make her feel special on this incredible milestone.

Known as the “true northern girl”, Dorothy was born in Salford, before moving and growing up in Spring Gardens.

Celebrating her 108th birthday on October 30, Dorothy attended a school in Pendleton, and was known to live a wildlife with her friends.

After school finished, she began working on a Salford farm, where she was able to help provide rations for those who did not have food alongside her husband.

Dorothy moved to Hertford 40 years ago and has been under Manaaki Care at Home for just over three years.

Jade Lancaster who has been working at Manaaki Care at Home for two years described her as “absolutely brilliant.”

As Jade continued: “I always ask her what’s her secret and she says oh I’m a Northern girl”.

Working closely with Dorothy she is eager for them to achieve this goal of getting her a new recliner chair after learning she can only sleep comfortably in her chair at home.

Manaaki Care at Home are aiming to make Dorothy’s birthday extra special this year with birthday cakes, balloons and a mass amount of cards for this very special lady.

Dorothy’s current old recliner chair is not suitable for her, and Jade stated that she doesn’t feel safe on it so doesn’t really use it.

But instead continues to sleep on a comfortable old chair in her living room.

Jade and Manaaki Care at Home want to get a new recliner chair for Dorothy that would be more suitable to sleep on.

The one they have found has built in pressure cushions to stop her getting sores, and reclines to help her move better and get her in the position she wants.

The chair is even measure to size to make sure it is completely perfect for Dorothy.

They are aiming to get it sorted for her birthday but will delay it if they need to.

“This lady is just unbelievable and I want to do everything for her”

From receiving cards from both Queen Elizabeth and King Charles previously, Manaaki-care at home want to show just how incredible this lady is and hope people can help them achieve their goal.

“It has been very overwhelming, I’ve been sat there several times with tears coming out of my eyes reading messages and things for her.”

The aim is to make Dorothy feel extra special on her 108th birthday, and make her feel more than appreciated for the landmark occasion.

If people are happy to get involved, they can donate to the JustGiving here, and for those wanting to send her a birthday to commemorate the occasion they can post their cards here.
