Ted Jones celebrates his 90th birthday after 15 years of volunteering - via Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust

Salford Royal Hospital hosted a surprise 90th birthday celebration for one of their extraordinary volunteers.

The party that had plenty of cake was held for Ted Jones, a volunteer at Salford Royal Hospital who has been giving his services for the past 15 years.

The celebration occurred on the Wednesday 9 October, the day after his 90th birthday.

And it seems that he has become a must loved member in the hospital, as he started volunteering at Salford Royal 15 years ago.

The now 90 year old was encouraged by his son, Phil, who worked in car parking at the hospital, who wanted him to find a way to keep busy after the passing of his mother.

However, they joked that it was a great way to keep an eye on his dad.

Sadly in recent years, Phil passed away a few years ago, but with the support of his friends it has encouraged Ted to remain at the hospital.

And uses this as encouragement to keep him going, as he said: “The day you stop is the day you die. That’s what keeps me going.”

Ted also went onto say he was very moved by the celebrations, and joked that he already looking forward to the party for his 100th.

The inspirational work of Ted Jones continues on his already impressive legacy at the hospital, as in December 2020, he made history as the first person in Greater Manchester to receive the Covid-19 vaccination.

The then 86-year-old was happy to support the hospital in their efforts to recover from the Covid pandemic.

Following his years of service and dedication to the hospital, Shirley Wallwork, volunteer coordinator said: “Ted is an extremely popular volunteer who is loved by all.

He is an inspiration to us all and can usually be seen driving the mobility scooter around the hospital delivering samples to the labs or walking lost visitors to their hospital appointments.”

It seems like he is a much loved member of the hospital, as he continues to serve as an inspiration to us all.
