It is only one week away from the Eccles by-election, and there will be five candidates running for one councillor position at the end of this month.

The by-election will look to find a position for a new candidate to replace Labour Councillor Sharmina August, who resigned from her position in September.

The vote will take place on the 31 October, after Cllr August left her position due to personal issues and an unmanageable workload.

After registration to vote closed on the Tuesday 15 October, with the postal deadline closing on the 16 October, residents of Eccles will have the chance to vote for their new candidate for the area.

Five candidates will be running in the by-election, and include Labour candidate Lisa Muir who previously led a campaign to save Monton village Christmas lights in 2022.

Following her work in Monton with the Village Association she has continued to work with the local residents and will look to continue her work for the community standing in the by-election.

The Labour candidate will be running against Sally Griffiths a candidate for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition.

Sally previously stood for the Worsley and Eccles: UK Parliamentary general election but lost with 241 votes and finished 8th place.

Another candidate for the by-election will be Salford Green Party candidate Sara Laing.

Laing has previously served as a school governor for the local primary school and has been working on social housing.

The party’s focus is primarily on climate change, health, housing and social care, and will be hoping to make some ground in the upcoming by-election next week.

As for the Liberal Democrats, Ian Alexander McKinlay will be throwing his hat into the ring in the upcoming by-election.

The Salford candidate recently stood for the Claremont ward in the Salford City Council election and finished 3rd place, but lost  255 votes.

And the final candidate is Daniel Andrew Whitehouse, who will be standing for the Conservative Party.

The Conservative Party candidate recently stood in the local election for the ward of Worsley and Westwood Park, but failed to receive the necessary amount of votes.

The by-electon vote will take place on Thursday 31 October between the hours of 7am and 10pm.

Candidates have been preparing for the by-election and have taken their campaigns to the local residents.

Returning Officer Tom Stannard said: “Those who have not registered cannot vote in the election. Photo ID is also required so if you don’t have any of the acceptable documents, apply for a free voter authority certificate before Wednesday 23 October. This is your chance to have your say.”

The deadline for applying for a proxy vote is Wednesday 23 October 2024. You can now apply for a proxy vote online.
