An appeal has been launched to honour Salfordians who volunteered in the Spanish Civil War.
A memorial is planned as a tribute to those who joined the International Brigades in supporting the Spanish Republic from 1936-1939 by raising funds, caring for refugees and fighting fascism.
The campaign is led by three representatives of the Salford Trades Council, the International Brigade Memorial Trust (IBMT), Salford Labour Party and the Working Class Movement Library (WCML).
The council nine Salford volunteers who were tragically killed in action, and a further 23 who fought for the cause.
Salford Labour Councillor, Jack Youd, who helped launch the campaign, has set up a fundraiser to raise £10,000 to help build the memorial.
Salford Labour MP Rebecca-Long-Bailey has tweeted in favour of the memorial.
She said: “Courageous volunteers from the City of Salford travelled to Spain to fight fascism and defend democracy, raised funds and cared for refugees.”
