More than 60 flats for social rent could be built on the site of Salford’s former Adelphi Lads club.
Plans have been submitted to build 63 social rent apartments on the Cannon Street site.

The development would provide 36 one-bed apartments and 27 two-bed apartments across a single building ranging from three to six storeys. Nearly 80 per cent of all social housing demand in Salford is for one or two-bed apartments.
Plans include a socialising area in the section with trees described as “a generous area of communal amenity space” within the ‘crook’ of the building, across the south eastern section of the site.
The plans say: “Further greenery and colour will be added to the site through the planting of ornamental shrubs along the Cannon Street frontage.”
Applications for the site come at a time of a social housing crisis where most houses are rendered unaffordable.
The properties will be managed by housing association, ForHousing, which owns 24,000 homes across the north west, with most being social housing.
The company is aiming to build a further 1,337 houses in the next five years in the north west.
The plans state: “The city needs an extra 809 affordable homes every year to meet current need. However at present there is an undersupply of affordable housing across the city.”
The Adelphi Lads Club was partly demolished in February 2021 and the rest of the area surrounding the derelict building contains several trees.
The club was founded in 1888, making it one of the oldest in the country. After a fire ripped through the building in 2010 it has been abandoned.
