Salford City are preparing to face Grimsby Town on Saturday in a game which could see the Ammies leapfrog their opponents in the League Two table.

The home side have had a very mediocre start to the season, picking up 12 points from three wins and three draws in their opening nine games, with the Ammies finding themselves in 15th place heading into this weekend’s action.

The visitors have not started much better than Salford this season as whilst Grimsby sit in 11th place, only three points separate the two sides ahead of this game – but a win for the travelling side could see them climb as high as 5th, which would see the Ammies fall further down the table.

A win for Salford, however, could see Karl Robinson’s side only one point away from the desired play-off positions if other results go their way, meaning that both sides will be motivated to achieve all three points in this fixture for the chance to propel either side further up the table.

Last season, Grimsby did the double over Salford winning both their fixtures against the Ammies – the Mariners ran out 2-0 winners when they hosted Salford back in August, and in the reverse fixture at the Peninsula Stadium; Grimsby won 3-0 whilst Simon Wiles was in temporary charge of the Ammies.

The hosts are winless in this fixture since 2022 when a hattrick from Matt Smith alongside an Ethan Galbraith strike saw Salford run out 4-1 winners away at Grimsby two seasons ago.

The Ammies head into this game off of the back of some mixed form, despite winning their most recent match 1-0 against AFC Wimbledon – they were winless in the three prior to that game as Salford lost against Newport County and Walsall, with a 0-0 draw away at Tranmere Rovers being sandwiched in between those results.

Karl Robinson will be hoping his side can use the win against AFC Wimbledon as a springboard for a much better run of form, as the Ammies look to challenge for the play-off places.

Grimsby, on the other hand, have lost their most recent game in League Two going into this game as they were defeated 3-0 by high-flying Doncaster Rovers – before that defeat though, the Mariners had won three on the bounce against Gillingham, Carlisle United and Bromley respectively.

A player to keep an eye on for Salford would undoubtedly be Junior Luamba, the 21-year-old came off the bench against AFC Wimbledon to grab the only goal of the game which was his second goal for the club. He, and the Ammies faithful, will be hoping that he can make a similar impact against Grimsby.

Grimsby’s danger man will be Kieran Green, who has been influential for the Mariners so far this season, picking up two goals and two assists, grabbing the winner in their last league win against Gillingham. That said, keep an eye on Denver Hume who has picked up three assists from left-back this season, the most in Grimsby’s squad.

Salford take on Grimsby tomorrow in a traditional 3pm kick-off at the Peninsula Stadium.
