Plans for a one way traffic lane on a busy Salford road have been given the go ahead after residents complained about it being used as a cut through.
Park Street in Swinton has been at the center of multiple traffic and road rage incidents, with residents launching appeals to Salford City Council for greater safety regulations and a reduced speed zone.
The concerns, which primarily stem from drivers using the street as a cut through from the A6 Manchester Road and the A666 Bolton Road, have been raised in a meeting which concluded with the confirmation of the proposed one way traffic lane and 20 miles per hour speed limit.
Speaking to Salford Now, Park Street resident, Louise Salvini said: “There’s a lot of build up in traffic, you see lots of near accidents and people shouting at each other. You get loads of kick offs”
“You can see where the concrete’s broken off.”
Another resident Vicky Macril said: “I’ve been on to the council numerous times, our car has been hit three times in the last 12 months. One of them drove off. I imagine three non-fault claims will increase my insurance premiums”
According to Vicky, the busiest times on the street are school drop offs and pick ups, with weekends also busy,
Deciding to take action themselves, some residents sent letters to every house on the street asking for drivers to stay off the path and park with all four wheels on the road.
Louise added: “We all got letters asking the residents to park on the road, they where finding lots of there car mirrors smashed with people walking in twos on the path.
“I was informed that the first thing the council tried to do did not go through.”
In the council meeting on Tuesday (October 8), all of the councilors involved were in favor of the plans to go ahead with a unanimous decision taken.
Multiple members of the public and residents of the street were given opportunities to voice their opinions during the meeting, three of which were in favor of the plans, with only one being in opposition.
Resident Vic Lawton, who was in favour of the plans, said “My concern is for pedestrians the traffic is horrendous, when people park on the path it makes it impossible for you to walk down apart from in a straight line, that makes it virtually non existent , when disabled people and mothers and children have to walk on the road”
“It’s that dangerous on our street for disabled people, it’s horrendous. People have got to the point there going through the park.”
Lead Councilor and chair of the meeting Mike Mcusker said: “On balance I think this is a good proposal that will dramatically improve life for the residents of Park Street without being a detriment to those living in neighboring streets.
“The recommendation is that the implementation of the traffic order is set out and the report be authorized.”
