Salford Mayor Paul Dennett has praised the plans for the Salford Rise being ‘delighted’ as construction has begun along Frederick Road. 

The project aims to renovate the Salford area building a new walkway to connect the University of Salford campus to the Crescent.

The developments will also hope to increase the amount of green spaces and tree planting in the area as it with plans to create a community facing public square with pop-up events and festivals.

The walkway will be five acres wide, spanning the entirety of Frederick Road becoming a key connection between University and Crescent innovation zone.

The construction of the project has been part funded by the governments “Levelling up fund” that contributed £13.17 million to improving the area.

Preparations are underway for the groundwork to be complete by the end of 2024, with construction on the bridge taking place in 2025, being completed by 2026.

Following the approved developments Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett commented: “I am delighted that this important project is now moving into the delivery phase.

“Salford Rise will better connect our communities to the Crescent and University campus and provide transformational change across Crescent Innovation, helping to unlock world-class innovation-led research and development opportunities that Salford residents and businesses can benefit from.”

The development comes as a part of a wider “Crescent masterplan” which includes a proposed 3,000 new homes, 1m sq. ft. of offices, a multi-model transport hub and a large areas of green space, with the whole project set to cost £2.5bn covering 252-acres of land.

The aim of the wider works is to “connect economic assets across the innovation zone to unlock significant development opportunities and enable collaboration between academia and industry.”

There is also plans to connect the education side of the projects University Campus site with academia working closely with industry.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Salford Professor Nic Beech has said: “Salford Rise is a great example of innovative regeneration work as part of the wider Crescent masterplan to benefit our Salford community, connecting people and fostering collaboration between businesses.

“This work will develop and enhance our local environment and provide vital sustainable travel options for students, colleagues, and visitors accessing our University campus and the surrounding areas.”

The Project Director Max King has commented on the project stated: “Starting on site at Salford Rise and seeing the first spade in the ground marks a landmark staging post as we begin to bring the vision for Crescent Salford to life.

“This project is a pivotal part of the wider masterplan, and particularly the innovation zone, unlocking opportunities and fostering collaboration to enable the people that live, work and study in Salford to thrive.”

The exciting prospect of the project will look to be completed across the proposed area by 2026.
