People struggling to pay their energy bills in Salford are being urged to seek help following another price hike.
Salford Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is encouraging residents to contact their energy supplier if they are unable to make payments following the energy price cap increase announced today (October 1).
The price cap, set by UK energy regulator Ofgem, has been increased until December 31 due to ‘geopolitical tensions’ causing a higher demand for resources.
The adjustments of the bills will be made with immediate effect, with households seeing an increase of £147 to £161 per year for the average consumer.
Salford CAB has issued the following advice on its website: “Anyone worried about paying their bill should contact their supplier in the first instance.
“They are obliged to discuss payment plans and direct consumers to government and third sector support where available.”
The recent adjustment in the price cap has been designed to limit the maximum amount energy suppliers can charge for each unit of energy.
And although the cap was intended to protect consumers from extreme price hikes, it will mean the increase of bills will climb for millions of homes across the country.
This autumn, many households in Salford will see a cost increase, especially for those on standard variable tariffs as a result of the volatile energy markets.
The recent increase in prices from the cap will mean winter will be an even harder time for families amid the cost-of-living crisis, impacting predominantly low-income families, pensioners and vulnerable groups.
The rise in energy prices will affect many across the city, and Salford CAB has advised consumers to seek out available support.
Ofgem has also shared various schemes to support people throughout the winter months including the Warm Home Discount and Winter Fuel Payments that can be found on the Gov.uk website.
