Salford Crescent is set to undergo a change after phase one of the masterplan has been given planning approval.

The new project that has been labelled, the Salford Rise project, will hope to change the landscape of the area.

The unveiled project will hope to create a well-connected community, and hope to enhance the infrastructure and public spaces.

The new plans have also shared that a large podium that will be built over Fredrick Road, that will create a safer path for pedestrian crossings.

As well as providing more seating areas for the community.

The original plans for construction were set to take place from the summer of 2022, following the secured funding of the Government’s Levelling Up Fund in October 2021.

With the £13.7 million for the project aimed to provide development to the region.

The project will introduce 2.5 hectares of new public space, including landscaped terraces, seating areas, and outdoor event spaces.

With the areas being designed to provide the community with inviting spaces to relax, socialise, and engage in outdoor activities.

However, since the funding the original plans have already been redesigned to help mitigate the rising costs in construction and the projected overspend.

The plans were approved over two months ago, with the preparatory work for the 90 meter long “green boulevard in the sky” beginning now.

With Eric Wright Civil Engineering being selected as a preferred contractor for the Salford Rise project.

Whilst the plans will be excited, the initial preparatory works involve traffic restrictions and full road closures at various points on Lissadel Street and Scarsdale Street.

With the plan coinciding with the temporary closure of busy Frederick Road throughout November 2024 (diversion routes will be in place).

With the plans in place, Salford Council stated on their website: “The schedule of these restrictions has been sequenced to minimize disruption to access and traffic flows.

“Access to residential and commercial properties will be maintained throughout the works, but there may be some delays on journeys.”

Following the development approvals, Thomas Kasaras, 21, from ‘Coffee Rules’ on Frederick Road said: “I think that this will be both good and bad for business. Despite the road disturbance, this new project may actually bring us a lot more customers.

“We’re right next to a waste disposal area so when you walk down Frederick Road it just looks like an industrial estate.

“So I think it would be great for improving the areas’ image.”

However despite the excitement for improving the image, there seems to be mixed opinions surrounding the project.

With some residents on Fredrick Road, also sharing their frustrations.

As Anya Jurowska, 20, who was  unaware of the plans. “I use Frederick road every day so I’m not really excited about the road closures.”

She continued: “It does sound quite advanced, so hopefully it will make the area easier to get around and maybe a little better looking.”
