Karl Robinson criticised Salford City’s “lack of common sense” in their 2-0 defeat to Walsall as he delivered a scathing review of his side’s disappointing performance.

The Ammies were dealt a costly blow in their pursuit of three consecutive League wins, as their high-flying opponents raced into a two-goal lead shortly after the half-time break.

Nathan Lowe and Charlie Lakin capitalised on chaotic Salford defending to give the away side a commanding advantage before the hour mark.

In an attempt to stem the flow of Walsall pressure, Robinson turned to his bench, but little could be done to erase the deficit caused by 15 minutes of backline madness.

Salford City in action against high-flying Walsall

While Robinson insisted that Salford’s second-half implosion was not through a lack of effort, but rather “a lack of common sense and stupidity” he lamented the poor on-the-ball decisions made throughout the match.

“We reverted back to kids’ football. You’ve got to set the tempo and we got caught up in playing too many stupid backwards passes,” he said.

“If they’re on the halfway line put a ball in behind, get them deeper and then we can play, for whatever reason we decided to think this game was a 5-aside match.

When this team is good, we pass forwards, we don’t amble – but today we ambled.” While Salford controlled the game throughout an evenly contested first period, Robinson was disappointed with his sides lack of cutting edge.

“We got giddy with the way we were playing, we have won two games on the trot and all of a sudden, we have become this passing team looking to build through thirds [playing] tippy tappy rubbish.”

Robinson highlighted that there is plenty of work to be done before Salford travel to Tranmere on Friday night. (19:45 Kick-off at Prenton Park).
