A 66-year-old man who suffered a cardiac arrest outside a Salford leisure centre has paid tribute to the man that saved his life.
Louis Lynch survived thanks a member of staff using the defibrillator available outside Irlam and Cadishead Leisure Centre, after he collapsed on the main road.
Passerby Benny Norris saw the collapsed man outside the building and ran in to inform the on duty manager of the incident.
Benny rushed to find the man surrounded by two nurses performing CPR, before he grabbed the defibrillators on the building.
After applying three shocks to Louis’s chest, he started to breathe again, and after he was resuscitated he was placed in a recovery position until an ambulance arrived five minutes later.
Louis is now recovering at home after a five-week stay in the hospital, where he received a double heart bypass and having an ICD fitted.
Following the incident Louis was thankful for the quick actions, as he said: “Benny saved my life following my sudden cardiac arrest outside the Leisure Centre.
“He had to shock me three time as I was unresponsive but his quick action together with others providing CPR saved my life.”
“I don’t have the words to thank him or Salford Community Leisure for providing the defibrillators.”
Benny himself downplayed his role in saving Mr Lynch back in June.
He said he was “just doing his job”, as he continued to refuse to take credit when others were involved in saving him.
Following the incident Salford Community Leisure have provided new defibrillators for Leisure centres across Salford with support form Salix Homes.
Salford Community Leisure and Leisure sport manager Paul Bland said “Without the support of Salix Homes & For Housing, funding the new equipment would’ve been more challenging. These new units will give us piece of mind for several years to come.”
