A ‘powerful’ one-woman depiction of the Frank McGuinness play ‘The Match Box’ is coming to The Kings Arms this September.
Set to run on Thursday September 12 and Friday 13, The Match Box is a story of love, loss and forgiveness, centring around Sal, who is living alone on a deserted island.
She tells us how tragic events from her past have brought her to this point, taking us on a raw, heartbreaking and at times humorous emotional journey that constantly shocks and surprises.
The play has previously garnered rave reviews at other venues, being described by The Observer as “a stunner” and by The Times as “so brutally powerful it knocks the breath out of your body.”
It is not the first time stage and screen actor Jess (formerly Jess Cummings), has performed professionally in Salford. After graduating from the renowned Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, she performed in a variety of plays in the area, most notably Be My Baby at The Lowry alongside Hi-De-Hi star Ruth Madoc and Coronation Street actress Brooke Vincent.
She has also worked as an actor and director at Salford Arts Theatre, and as a guest lecturer at the University of Salford.
Now, she is looking forward to bringing her own production to the area and to new audiences in other local theatres.
“I am really excited that we’ll be performing The Match Box at The King’s Arms,” said Jess.
“I have incredibly fond memories of performing in Salford, so it was important to me to bring the production to this brilliant venue that has such strong ties with its local community. We can’t wait to share this beautiful and heartbreaking story with audiences in the North West and beyond.”
After the North West segment of the tour, the company is planning to take the production to small independent theatres across the UK. The project has been funded by a Kickstarter campaign and a generous donation by local theatre companies.
