A new free exhibition which celebrates the often “overlooked parts of Salford” is coming to Salford Museum & Art Gallery this August.
The exhibition, which opens on August 31, celebrates the city of Salford through a series of paintings by local artists Anthony McCarthy and Peter James Houghton.
Both artists have deep rooted connections with Salford and have witnessed the city’s changing landscape over the last 20 years.
Peter’s paintings “find beauty in the mundane, neglected and overlooked parts of Salford”, while Anthony’s work is influenced by the famous Salford artist LS Lowry.
Antony’s paintings capture both the people and the architecture found throughout the city in the LS Lowry-style. Laurence Stephen Lowry said he came across his distinctive style of painting when his family moved from Manchester to an urban part of Salford when he was younger.
“I was interested in portrait painting until I went to live in Pendlebury,” he said. “The industrial scene got me. I disliked [painting industrial scenes] at first, then I got used to it.
“I began to think there is something in it… then I began to think there was a lot in it.”
The exhibition called ‘Two Artists, One City: Peter James Houghton and Anthony McCarthy’ will run till February 9 2025 at the museum on the Crescent. Tickets are not required.
