Gary Neville has become Salford City’s majority share owner after acquiring Peter Lim’s stake in the club.

The former Manchester United full-back – alongside his ‘Class of 92’ teammates Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Phil Neville – partnered up with Lim to takeover Salford City as part of a collective bid in 2014. At the time, the club were in the eighth tier of English football.

Over the past decade, Salford have experienced a meteoric rise, earning five promotions in nine seasons. However, with the club set to enter its sixth consecutive term in League Two, The Ammies upward momentum has stalled.

Last term, Salford slipped to an underwhelming 20th-place finish marked with a mid-season managerial switch.

Taking over from Neil Wood, Karl Robinson achieved his goal of keeping the club in the fourth tier. Throughout his time in charge, he has stressed the need for increased investment in the squad, and this summer he has been well-backed in the transfer market.

Lim’s departure aligns with Salford City’s recent efforts to raise funds to spend on the playing side. According to the club, the move will help to “pave the way for a new strategic partner.”

Until now, Lim has controlled 40% of the club, while the former Manchester United teammates split the remaining 60% share.

In a joint statement, the ‘Class of 92’ highlighted their long-term commitment to The Ammies and thanked Lim for his contribution over the last 10 years.

“We cannot thank Peter enough for his support, friendship, belief and loyalty to us for over 10 years, not only in Salford City but in other projects that we have worked on together. Peter has been integral in helping to create a legacy at Salford City that we are now determined to build on.”

Club CEO Nicky Butt added: “Through Lim’s partnership, the club achieved four promotions in the first five seasons, reaching the English Football League in 2019 and claiming the EFL Trophy in 2020, the first major trophy in the club’s history.”
