Salford City have announced the arrival of centre-back Stephan Negru on loan from Oxford United for the 2024-25 season.

The defender was signed by Karl Robinson during his time at Oxford and was part of the squad that won promotion to the Championship last season via the League One play-offs.

While Negru appeared 19 times for the U’s last term, he has joined Salford in search of more regular game time.

Salford’s newest recruit has been clear about the club’s ambitions for the upcoming campaign and is hoping to deliver promotion from League Two this season.

“I’m here to win, I want to win the league, it’s as simple as that. I don’t believe in small goals, I aim for the highest that we can, and I believe that we can win the league and get promoted to League One,” Negru said.

“He [Robinson] is a big part of why I came here, and I am excited to be playing underneath him and getting the minutes that I need.

He is someone that puts his trust in you, he puts belief in you; he builds your confidence, and I like the style of football that he plays.

“I honestly cannot wait to get started, work underneath him and play my best football.”

Negru, who previously played for Irish Premier Division side Shelbourne, has 30 professional appearances under his belt and will hope to figure regularly at the Peninsula stadium this season.

The 21-year-old’s move to the club remains subject to EFL and FA ratification and approval.

Earlier this summer, Salford City completed the signing of striker Cole Stockton from Burton Albion, while Matty Lund signed a year-long contract extension with the Ammies.

Karl Robinson’s squad is beginning to take shape.
