A renowned Korean choreographer will make her UK debut at The Lowry in Salford with her latest work entitled Cheok.
The choreographer, Ae-soon Ahn, will be coming to Salford on June 3 and 4 as part of ‘A Festival of Korean Dance 2024’.
Ae-Soon Ahn was formerly the Artistic Director of Korea’s premier company Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, and was the first Korean choreographer invited to choreograph at Chaillot National Theatre in France and Liège Theatre in Belgium.
Jaeyeon Park, Senior Producer at the Korean Cultural Centre UK, said: “Making her UK debut will be Ae-Soon Ahn with Cheok – this profound piece offers a unique perspective on the Korean contemporary dance scene, adding another compelling dimension to the program.
Cheok by Ae-Soon Ahn uses the Korean word, which is a traditional Asian standard of measurement meaning ‘span of the hand’, to explore personal and individual measurement.
Jaeyeon Park, Senior Producer at the Korean Cultural Centre UK, said: “This profound piece offers a unique perspective on the Korean contemporary dance scene, adding another compelling dimension to the program.”
Six dancers perform in a “rich and sensuous landscape of light, video, sound, and movement,” to create new connections that rediscover traditional Asian values.
Eckhard Thiemann, Programming Associate: Dance at The Lowry, said: “This is the second year we are bringing the Festival of Korean Dance to The Lowry and we are proud to present one of Korea’s most senior choreographers Ae-soon Ahn in her signature work.
Delicate, atmospheric and filled with shifting moods, Cheok brings you what makes Korean dance special: precision, exquisite design and a glimpse into a world where heritage and modernity are not contradictory.”
