Salford City Stockport County

Salford City FC will host 2nd place Stockport County on Thursday night live on Sky Sports, as they look to end their winless run.

Salford City, who haven’t won in their previous four games, face a tough challenge mid-week against a Stockport County side who are eyeing up promotion to League 1.

After going ahead against MK Dons last Saturday but ultimately losing 3-1, Karl Robinson will need a more resilient display from his team if they are going to get a result on Thursday.

Salford’s goal scoring form, through the league’s joint top goal scorer Matt Smith, continues to be impressive but it is at the other end of the pitch that needs improving if they wish to move up the table.

The Ammies have not been able to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 10 games and haven’t kept one at home in 2024.

They were able to keep one, however, when they met Stockport earlier in the season with the match at Edgeley Park seeing no goals scored and the Ammies picking up an impressive point.

Salford City’s recent run of games.

Following Saturday’s defeat to MK Dons, Salford slipped down to 20th in the league whereas Stockport could move level with Mansfield at the top of the table with a win at The Peninsula.

The Hatters managed to snatch a late winner on Saturday at home to Newport with Paddy Madden redeeming his second-half penalty being saved by volleying home in the 93rd minute.

Despite just the 30 minute drive down the M60 separating the two clubs; the 26-point difference separating the two Greater Manchester sides in League 2 highlights the challenge that Salford will face.

Karl Robinson was clear after Saturday’s loss that his team are playing well and things will improve with time.

“I don’t think we’re seeing enough consistent results to support what is good play and that’s something that over time … we’ll certainly do.”

The manager was also keen to praise the fans’ support after seeing their team fail to win for a fourth game in a row.

“The players at Mansfield and again today got so much support from the fans, and I think the fans can see we’re playing better, they can see that we do care and we’re putting a lot of effort in.”

The players could feel the extra pressure of the TV cameras as well as the fact every other team in the league is playing on Tuesday night.

Because of this, Salford could find themselves three points closer to the relegation zone by the time they line-up to play on Thursday if results don’t go their way.

Either way it is going to be a big test for Robinson’s men as they look for a first win in four against 2nd in the league.
