Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is spearheading this project by upgrading speed cameras with the latest generation of average speed systems.
These systems utilise advanced automatic number plate recognition.
Transport for Greater Manchester has not yet detailed which specific speed cameras are to be replaced.
Superintendent Gareth Parkin, from GMP’s Specialist Operations, said: “These speed camera upgrades across 25 routes in Greater Manchester are a fantastic improvement on road safety measures for all who live, work, and visit the area.”
Between 2020 and 2022, almost 600 people either lost their lives or were seriously injured in road incidents, prompting the need for enhanced safety measures.
Superintendent Gareth Parkin added: “Speeding represents one of the ‘fatal four’ that we focus on here in Greater Manchester, alongside drink and drug driving, using mobile devices behind the wheel and the non-wearing of seat belts.”
The new speed camera system is part of the Safety Camera Project, funded through the Mayor’s Challenge Fund and delivered by TfGM on behalf of the Safer Roads Greater Manchester Partnership.
Research from the RAC Foundation shows that average speed technology can lead to a reduction in injuries, including life-changing injuries, caused by road traffic collisions.
